The MIT Wrestling Team competed at the Northeast Conference National Qualifier at Springfield Technical Community College and finished tied for 5th place as a team. The Engineers put 3 wrestlers in the finals and had 4 wrestlers place in the top 4. Freshman, Keith Skaggs won the 125 pound weight class defeating the 2017 defending champion, Christian Antoine 7-5 in overtime. Keith won his first match of the day by a score of 13-2. Grad student, Jacob Adams went 3 and 1 on the day finishing in 2nd place at 149 pounds. Jacob had a pin, a technical fall and a regular decision on his way to the finals. In the finals, Jacob was finishing a front headlock and got stepped over and pinned. Senior, captain Frank Soucy finished the day with a 2 and 1 record placing 2nd at 184 pounds. He opened the day with a 16-0 technical fall. He followed it up with a 9 to 1 major decision over the number 2 seed. Frank lost in the finals to the number 1 seed, George Andrews from The University of Connecticut who is a two-time NCWA All-American. Frank wrestled very aggressive but fell short. Senior, Jonathon Brown finished in 4th place at heavyweight. He had to injury default to 4th. He will be ready to go in 2 weeks at the national tournament. Grad student, Brendon O’Neill competed at 165 pounds and wrestled hard but was unable to qualify for nationals. The 4 wrestlers will be heading to Allen, Texas on Wednesday, March 13th to compete at the NCWA National Tournament which starts on Thursday, March 14th and finishes on Saturday, March 16th. The MIT Wrestling team traveled to Mesquite, NV to compete at the NCWA National Duals on January 25th and 26th. MIT upset the number 10th seed, Richland College by a score of 28-27 to finish in 12th place.

157 pounder, Jacob Adams was 5 and 1 on the weekend with 3 technical falls. Jacob is making constant improvements from week to week and is shaking off the rust from a 4 year hiatus.

133 pounder, Keith Skaggs got 3 wins on the weekend and beat 1 of his opponents he lost to the day before. Senior captain, Frank Soucy had 3 wins on the weekend including a pin and a technical fall. He fought back in his first match of the weekend, down 10-1 before pinning his opponent in the 3rd period. Senior captain, Jonathon Brown also had 3 wins on the weekend including 2 pins.

Overall, Coach Layte and Coach Bosco were pleased with the effort from each guy. They feel the team wrestled well but still has work to do before the conference and national tournament. We need to get back in the practice room to improve on our weaknesses and work on attacking more says Coach Bosco.
