The MIT Wrestling Team traveled to Troy, NY and defeated Northeastern University 28-9 and defeated RPI 25-18. All of the MIT wrestlers each registered at least 1 win. Freshman, Keith Skaggs went 3-0 on the day including a pin. Junior, Spencer Kelleher went 1-2. Grad student, Jacob Adam went 2-0 on the day including a major and a technical fall. Grad student, Brendan O’Neill went 2-1 on the day including a 14-0 win. Senior captain, Frank Soucy went 2-0 on the day including a technical fall. Senior captain, Jonathan Brown went 2-0 on the day including a pin against RPI that won the dual for the Engineers. The Engineers were up 19-18 in the heavyweight match win Brown scored the fall at 5:29. Coach Layte was very happy with how the team performed today. “Today was a good day from the standpoint of seeing where we are at and what we have to improve on. We have a lot to work on but I really liked the effort every guy put forward.”
The Engineers next competition is the Ted Reese Tournament hosted by the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, December 1st.
The MIT Wrestling team is looking forward to the 2018-2019 season. We have a strong mix of veterans and newcomers. The team will be lead by senior captain, Frank Soucy, senior, Jonathon Brown and junior, Ryan Shubert. Coach Layte and Coach Bosco are very excited about the outlook for the season. We also welcome four-year MIT wrestler, Jose Velarde to the coaching staff. Jose also known as “Pepe” will be mainly working with the light weights.
Below is a brief overview of each wrestler on the team.
Freshman, Keith Skaggs is from West Virginia. Keith was a four-time state place winner and graduated as the winningest wrestler in school history. He will compete at 125 pounds.
Freshman, Albert Garcia is from Texas and is new to the sport. He will compete at 133 pounds.
Freshman, Spencer Kelleher is from New Jersey and is new to the sport. He will compete at either 149 or 157 pounds.
Grad student, Jacob Adams graduated from Virginia Tech and is originally from Virginia. He was a state place winner and had a 110 wins in high school. He will compete at either 149 or 157.
Junior, Ryan Shubert is from Maryland and was 2nd in the state. Ryan competed for MIT as a freshman and placed 2nd in the Northeast Conference tournament and is an NCWA national qualifier. He will compete at 165 pounds.
Senior, captain Frank Soucy is from Massachusetts. He is a three-year varsity wrestler and is a two-time NCWA national qualifier. Frank will start the season at 184 pounds and move down to 174 pounds.
Senior, George Friedlander returns to the team after a two-year hiatus. He is from New York and will compete at 184 pounds.
Grad student, Brendan O’Neil graduated from the University of Florida and is originally from Florida. Brendan joined the Navy after college and has a rank of Lieutenant Commander. He will compete at either 184 or 197 pounds.
Senior, Jonathon Brown enters his third season. He was an NCWA national qualifier as a freshman. He will compete at 235 pounds.
The team kicks the season off traveling to RPI on Saturday, November 17th for a tri-meet with RPI and Northeastern. Wrestling starts at 11am.
