The MIT wrestling team traveled to the University of New Hampshire for the Northeast Conference Championships which is the NCWA national qualifier. Five wrestler qualified for the national tournament. MIT had three wrestlers in the finals. Junior, Matt Chun placed 2nd at 125 pounds. Freshman, Ryan Shubert was seeded sixth. He defeated the number two and number seven seed to make it to the finals and lost to the number one seed at 165 pounds. Senior, Joe Lowman placed second at 197 pounds. Senior, Jose Velarde bounced back from a first round loss and finished fifth at 141 pounds. Sophomore, Frank Soucy finshed in seventh place at 174 pounds and was awarded a wild card to nationals. Sophomore Jonathan Brown finished in seventh place at 197 pounds. Junior, Raoul Khouri also finished in seventh place at 235 pounds. The results will be posted on the NCWA.net website shortly.
The team is now preparing for the NCWA national tournament in Allen, Texas which begins on Thursday, March 9th and finishes on Saturday, March 11th. The team will travel to Allen on Wednesday, March 10th. If you’re in the area please come by the Allen Event Center and cheer on the team. The MIT wrestling team hosted the first annual Andrew Esquivel Duals in memory of Andrew Esquivel at MIT on Saturday, February 11th. Attending the duals were the University of Massachusetts, the University of New Hampshire and Yale University. MIT won both matches on the day defeating Yale 31 to 24 and the University of Massachusetts 23-18. Senior, Jose Velarde was dominant on the day as he got 4 wins, 1 by fall, 1 by technical fall, 1 by a major decision and 1 forfeit. Sophomore, Frank Soucy won both his matches in impressive fashion, both by technical fall outscoring his opponents 32 to 1. Junior, Matthew Chun went 2 and 1 wining by a pin and a technical fall. Junior Raoul Khouri won both his matches including a pin. Joe Lowman, Ryan Shubert and Jonathon Brown all won 1 match on the day.

The MIT wrestling team traveled to the University of New Hampshire on Sunday, February 5th to compete in the New England Championships. MIT had only 4 wrestlers compete. They all reached the finals of their perspective weight classes. Senior, captain Joe Lowman won the 197 pound weight class. Senior, Jose Velarde placed 2nd in the 133 pound weight class. Junior, Matthew Chun placed 2nd in the 125 pound weight class and freshman, Ryan Shubert placed 2nd in the 165 pound weight class.
The last competition for the team before the conference tournament is on Saturday, February 11th at MIT. The event is called the Andrew Esquivel Duals, in memory of Drew. Wrestling will start at 10am in DuPont gym. MIT will be wrestling Yale and the University of Massachusetts. We will also be honoring our 2 seniors, Joe Lowman and Jose Velarde. Please come and cheer the team on.
